What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

CTS occurs when the carpal tunnel in your wrist swells and compresses the median nerve, placing it under pressure. This causes pain, numbness and a tingling sensation throughout your hand and fingers.

This swelling is often caused by repetitive movements in the hands, such as:

• Typing for long periods, especially without proper wrist support
• Repeated heavy lifting
• Assembly line work
• Repeated, fine motor wrist movements, such as those made by hairdressers and barbers
• Regular use of vibrating construction tools.

Broken or fractured bones in the wrist, following a slip, trip or fall, can also lead to CTS – as can certain health conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Carpal tunnel symptoms

CTS has a number of uncomfortable symptoms – you may experience:

• Wrist pain
• Tingling and numbness in the fingers – similar to the sensation of ‘pins and needles’
• An aching sensation in your fingers, wrist, hand or arm
• A burning sensation in your fingers and hand
• Weakness in the hand and wrist, leading to loss of grip strength – you may find you are dropping items more than usual
• Difficulty moving the wrist and performing delicate tasks.

You may find that your symptoms come and go, worsening in the evenings. CTS can lead to you being unable to perform daily tasks, including driving, using your mobile phone, working, and sleeping comfortably.

When left untreated, CTS can lead to permanent nerve damage in your hand. If your carpal tunnel pain has been caused by the negligence of your employer, you deserve serious compensation for the impact of this injury on your life.

Making a carpal tunnel injury claim

In order to make a successful carpal tunnel injury claim, you must prove that your CTS was caused by your job and that your employer was negligent.

Examples of such negligence include:

• Lack of regular breaks – particularly if your job includes physical activities
• Lack of risk assessments
• Failure to provide alternative equipment upon request – such as modified keyboards or wrist supports
• Failure to train – for instance, you may not have been shown how to lift heavy objects safely and responsibly
• Failure to provide PPE – for instance, anti-vibration gloves when using vibrating construction tools.
